SMS & Messaging Policy
Last updated: March 20, 2026
Overview
ServiceMonitor, operated by Colab Technologies LLC, offers optional SMS notifications for cloud infrastructure uptime alerts. This policy explains how we use SMS messaging, how you opt in, and how you can opt out.
What Messages We Send
ServiceMonitor sends the following types of SMS messages:
- Uptime alert notifications: Sent when a monitored cloud service goes down, becomes degraded, or recovers. Example: "[ServiceMonitor] DOWN: AWS EC2 (us-east-1) — https://health.aws.amazon.com/health/status"
- Verification codes: A one-time 6-digit code sent when you add a new SMS notification channel, to confirm you own the phone number.
- Test alerts: Sent when you click "Send Test Alert" while configuring an SMS notification channel.
We do not send marketing messages, promotional offers, or any messages unrelated to your configured uptime monitoring alerts.
How You Opt In
SMS notifications are never enabled by default. You must take all of the following explicit actions to receive SMS alerts:
- Create a ServiceMonitor account
- Navigate to Notification Channels in your account settings
- Choose "SMS" as a channel type and enter your phone number
- Verify your phone number by entering the 6-digit code we send, or by successfully receiving a test alert
- Attach the SMS channel to one or more trackers
By completing these steps, you consent to receive automated uptime alert messages at the phone number you provided.
Message Frequency
Message frequency depends on the health of the cloud services you monitor. Typical usage:
- Most users receive fewer than 5 messages per month
- During a major outage affecting multiple services, you may receive several messages in a short period
- Cooldown periods prevent duplicate alerts for the same incident
- You can configure severity filters to reduce message volume
How to Opt Out
You can stop receiving SMS messages at any time by:
- Replying STOP to any message from ServiceMonitor
- Removing the SMS channel from your account settings at service-monitor.co/settings/channels
- Deactivating the channel by toggling it off in channel settings
- Deleting your account from Account Settings, which removes all notification channels
After opting out, you will receive no further SMS messages. To resume, you must re-add and re-verify the SMS channel.
Costs
Message and data rates may apply. ServiceMonitor does not charge for SMS messages, but your mobile carrier may charge standard messaging fees. Check with your carrier for details.
Data Privacy
Your phone number is:
- Used only to deliver uptime alert messages you have opted into
- Stored securely in our database and transmitted to Twilio (our SMS delivery provider) only when sending a message
- Never sold, shared, or used for marketing
- Permanently deleted when you remove the SMS channel or delete your account
For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
Supported Carriers
SMS delivery is supported on all major US carriers including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and most regional carriers. International messaging may be available depending on your carrier and region.
